    1. The Higaonon Tribe referred the Barangay Cugman as "GUGMAN" before the arrival of the Spaniards since the locals were generally peace-loving. Whenever the words "PAHINA" or "BALIKATAN" were said, practically all of the locals were eager to assist one another.

As time passed, foreigners began to relocate to this neighborhood, and because the name "GUGMAN" was difficult for them to pronounce, they substituted "GUGMA," and the area has been dubbed "CUGMAN" by practically all residents of Cagayan de Oro City ever since.

Cugman was the only sitio of barangay Gusa from 1926 to 1982, when it was split from the rest of the barangay by a petition signed by the locals.

In 1992, the Barangay Council decided to hold an annual celebration of Barangay Day in December to commemorate the Barangay Gusa's declaration of independence.
