Three Angels

Early morning on October 21, 2009 three pupils came to my Office and handed over two pieces of jack and jill magic coated choco cracker sandwich with a greeting "Happy Birthday Sir". Though It was a simple gift coming from them but I was touched on their sincerity and thoughtfulness that they showed. I almost cried on that day but very happy because of the three pupils whom I considered as the three angels who visited me on my Birthday.

Divided we fall, united we stand is a very popular sayings to every leader of the group and of the country as a whole. Every nation, organization, family and team always demand for teamwork and cooperation. A failure of one is a failure of all, and a success of one is a success of all. Teamwork made the Cugman Elementary School athletic team a champion during the district meet last Sept.18, 2009.Coaches and athletes work together harmoniously, shared ideas and techniques on how to improve ones performance on a certain event. Friends and relatives shared their own ways and means to bring the athletes to the fullest. The principal showed his own manner of supporting the athletes by giving them the necessary sporting goods like shoes, for them to work hard for the school. GPTCA officials promised to give rewards for the winners so that they will be motivated to give their best during the game. Teachers prepared and served the food to the athletes while some are paramedics ready to give first aid. The success of the CES team is through the efforts and perseverance of all the people that showed concern and love to the athletes.

Cagayan de Oro City, Lapasan Lions Club District 301-E,Philippines conducted their final check-up for those pupils in the public schools who experienced visual problems, last September 8,2009. The program “ Sight for Kids” was headed by Mr. Washington Limwatek, the district governor of the Lions Club, together with the medical team of the Division of Cagayan de Oro City. “ We are on our 3rd year of helping the visually impaired pupils in the public schools from grades III-VI”, said Dr. Leo Generalao project chairman of the Lions Club District 301-E. Optometrist Dr. Aurora Catajoy, conducted the final check-up of the pupils’ eyes. The child with vision problem will be given a free eyeglasses. “I am so happy that at last I will be given a free eyeglasses so that I can see clearly the words on my book,” said Kamylle Miera Valdehueza, a grade V pupil of Cugman Elementary School, Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines.

465 pupils of CES benefited the feeding program of the Hon. Cong. Rufus Rodriguez of the 2nd Congressional District Of Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines last Sept. 10, 2009. The said feeding program was officially launched by the Congressman together with the medical team of the division of CDO headed by Dr. Baldomero Mark Meso. Mr. Elmer Cotiamco, GPTCA president and EPP teachers, Mrs. Rebecca Tepait and Celeste Pacheco and the Teachers’ Club president Mrs. Elizabeth Daquilog prepared the foods for the feeding of the undernourished children. The purpose of the said program is to help the underweight children to gain more weight so that they can perform well in school.
“ I love children, because they are the hope of this country,” said the Congressman.

Tioy Joe (Uncle Joe) loves to collect coin when he was still alive. He collected thousands of pieces of Twenty Five Centavos (Philippine currency). The coin ranges from year 1960 to 1966 . The upper portion of the coin is a Filipina woman and the back portion of it is a Philippine Seal with a “Central Bank of the Philippines” encrypted around its edges.

This image is almost 100 years old. First owned by the mother of Mr. Jose Liñan Lumacang of Tin-ao, Agusan, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. Jose Lumacang was a devote of St. Anthony de Padua after her mother turnover the image to him. Jose died last March 16, 2009 at the age of 86. Jose gave this image to his nephew Bobot Raran Reyes 3 days before he died. St. Anthony de Padua feast day will be celebrated every 13th day of June.

Division Libray Hub

The Department of Education has embarked a nationwide project called "LIBRARY HUB". Only 10 divisions have been considered for the first batch, and one of these is the Division of Cagayan de Oro City. The Library Hub at Cugman Elementary School, Cagayan de Oro will serve as a wholesome library exclusively servicing 88,000 elementary and secondary pupils and students within the division. Former Congressman Constatino Jaraula now Mayor of Cagayan de Oro donated two (2) Buildings for said project and the division of Cagayan de Oro through former DepEd Assistant Secretary Camilo Miguel Montesa who initially bestowed brand new books worth five (5) million pesos. The Library Hub was inaugurated during the time of former Schools Division Superintendent of Cagayan de Oro DR. Isabelita M. Borres. The Library Hub of Cagayan de Oro is now one of the five (5) finalist on the Search of the Most Functional Library Hub 2009 in the whole Philippines. With the full support of our SDS Dr. Myrna S. Parents play an important role in developing the reading capabilities of their child. At early age the child should be trained to read and parents should lead in developing the love for reading habit on their child. Parents will read aloud together with their child most especially before bedtime. Buying books is an investment to the part of their child's early education. See to it that at early age your child could reach / scaffold as many books as they can because by then love for reading will develop.

Crocodile selling shoes

The Buwaya (Crocodile) man in red t-shirt sells his branded second hand shoes to Divisoria Night Café Market at Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. Here in Cagayan de Oro we called the shoe repairman who buy and sells used shoes as Buwaya. This shoes were coming from Korea, China, Vietnam and other Asian countries. The Buwaya bought it from an Ukay Ukay store ( Used clothing and shoes store)in retail price here in Cogon Market. They wash, repair and repaint the shoes and sell it to Divisoria Night Café Market every Friday and Saturday night. According to Long Hair not his real name (Buwaya in red t-shirt) this is a good business here in the city considering that people love to have branded shoes that they can afford to buy because the branded brand new shoes are very expensive.

From China with love

May 14-19, 2006 were red-letter days for a struggling administrator like me. I got the chance to travel with SDS Isabelita M. Borres to the country where martial arts, jade, traditional healing and exotic women come close with nature. The sights and sounds of China… It was purely an exhilarating experience.

But the highlight of our study was on observing and benchmarking the Teacher Development Program of China. Being one of Asia's soaring economy, the country is known for its principle - centered educational philosophies which are truly worth-emulating . The main objective of the tour was to identify factors of teachers superior performance, best practices and training.

Our group paid a visit to the Philippine Embassy Office and got the chance to meet Ambassador Sonia Cataumber - Braudy. She was a very warm person who gave her vivid observation of the following concerns: The apparent retrogression of the competencies of the elementary /secondary teachers: the poor training/teacher development program: the need to upgrade teachers/teaching skills; to establish inter-country linkages through the DFA; the procedures that the Group will adapt after this observation tour and the possibility of future educational/culture exchange program.

We also visited the Ministry of Education which was facilitated by Mr. Zhu Li, Program Officer. From him, I gained the following insights: the composition of the 14 M tracking form of China of whom 5.9 M are in the elementary schools; 3.7 M for secondary; 1.3 M for teaching education and the rest for vocational - technical schools and graduate studies; Policies related to Hiring of Teachers focused on academic preparation with the necessary certification and the passing of the examination and the Training System involving the a) pre-position TEACHERS; AND THE B) IN-POSITION TEACHERS.

Barangay Cugman is located at the Northeastern part of Cagayan de Oro City and is 7.6 kilometers from the Poblacion and has a total land area of 3,122.0584 hectares as per record of the City Assessor’s Office. It is bounded by: North-Macajalar Bay, South-Forest, Zone & Bukidnon Province, East-Cugman River & Barangay Tablon, and West-Bigaan River & Barangay Gusa.

As of 1994 records from the City Assessor’s Office, total taxable land area of Barangay Cugman is 627.0473 hectares and the remaining area are categorized as follows: Residential – 86.7177 has., Commercial – 13.9225 has., Industrial – 18.1271 has., Agricultural – 508.2456 has.. The data was based on the revised Tax Declarations filed and declared by land owners in the City Assessor’s Office.

Barangay Cugman is known for each beautiful beach particularly Chali beach and Bulakenia Resort which are good for indoor and outdoor activities. Another Pride of Cugman is the Eco Village Gardens of Malasag which is situated on the hillside where one could be free from the heat and dust of the city and where one can breathe fresh air, can feast his eyes with the beauty of nature and feel free, relaxed and contented.

The residents of Cugman are engaged in various types of livelihood such as: charcoal production, lumber exporting, fishing, farming and business. Majority of the populace are self-employed, laborers, private and government employees, businessmen and farmers.

Sixty percent (60%) of the residents of Cugman are enjoying the services of the Cagayan de Oro Water District. In terms of transportation, Cugman has many passenger jeepneys running via Cugman Gusa- Cogon Market route. Those residing along the national Highway can ride the passenger jeepneys routing from Bugo, Tagoloan and Villanueva to Cogon Market.

The customs and traditions of the people of Cugman are as follows: (1) Palihi and Padugo. A ritual where people butchered pigs, chicken or goat before foundation of buildings. Coins were also buried beneath each post to ensure good luck. (2) Buhat-Buhat, ritual that offers foods and chants to the spirit of nature that are believed to cause human ailments. (3) Pasaka. Marriage customs where the groom’s relatives go to the bride’s home to ask for her hands. They bring food and drinks with them.

Cugman has various religious sectors: Roman Catholic, Iglesia Filipina Independente, Iglesia ni Cristo, Buddism, Iglesia sa Dios Espiritu Santu, Later Day Saints, Baptist, Jehovah’s Witness, Islam, and Protestants.

Cugman Elementary School

Cugman Elementary School is under East District 1, Division of Cagayan de Oro City. The school was opened in 1948 with Mrs.LEONARDO LEYRITANA as first school in-charged who handled Grades I and II classes with Mr. Atilano Labuntong who handled Grades III and IV classes. They held their classes in a coconut dryer near the seashore. When there was a heavy downpour, they scampered under nearby houses and held their classes there,

In 1953, more pupils enrolled. The late Mr. Laureano Villanueva, who was then the barangay captain, requested some elderly residents who have finished high school to monitor some children’s activities until the time of formant teachers came. The Parent-Teachers’ Association with the Barangay Officials collaborated their efforts to build the school with complete rooms for the children,

With the effort and interests shown among the people in the community for their children’s education, Cugman Elementary School was realized and made in 1953 with Mr. Julian Salcedo as School Principal.

As years went by, the number of teachers increases. Started from two (2) and now it has forty-five (45) active teachers rendering teaching services with the total population of one thousand seven hundred sixty-five (1,765) pupils under the leadership of Dr. Arlan Paul R. Reyes.
